About Akshaya Tritiya

Akshaya Tritiya falls on Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya. The word "akshaya" means imperishable, and tradition holds that charity, prayer and good beginnings made on this day bear fruit that does not diminish. It is regarded as one of the rare self-auspicious days, so many families begin new ventures, perform griha pravesh or hold weddings without needing a separate muhurat. In Rajasthan, where it is lovingly called Akha Teej, it has long been a popular day for marriages.

Many stories are linked with the day. It is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Parashurama, and some traditions associate it with the beginning of the Treta Yuga and the descent of the Ganga to earth. In Jainism, it marks the day Lord Rishabhadeva broke his long fast with sugarcane juice. The doors of the Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines traditionally open around this time. Families worship Lakshmi Narayan, give water pots, grain and fans to those in need, and some buy a small item of gold or silver as a token of lasting blessings.

How it is observed

  • Worshipping Lakshmi Narayan, Kubera or Lord Parashurama
  • Giving water-filled earthen pots, grain, fruit or clothes in charity
  • Starting a new venture, study or purchase on this auspicious day
  • Performing griha pravesh or weddings, especially in Rajasthan
  • Offering barley and sattu, and sharing cooling summer foods
