About Hanuman Jayanti
Hanuman Jayanti celebrates the birth of Lord Hanuman, son of Anjana and Kesari and blessed by Vayu, the wind god. In much of North India it is observed on Chaitra Purnima. Many devotees prefer to call it Hanuman Janmotsav, since Hanuman is regarded as chiranjeevi, one who lives on through the ages.
In the Ramayana, Hanuman is the devoted servant of Lord Rama. He leaps across the ocean to find Sita in Lanka, carries the Sanjeevani mountain to revive Lakshmana and serves Rama with complete humility. For this reason he is worshipped as a protector and remover of fear, and as a model of strength guided by devotion. On his day, temples are decorated, devotees offer sindoor mixed with oil, and the Hanuman Chalisa and Sundarkand are recited throughout the day. The date varies by region: Tamil Nadu observes Hanumath Jayanthi in Margashirsha, Karnataka celebrates Hanuman Vratam on Margashirsha Shukla Trayodashi, and Andhra Pradesh and Telangana mark it in Vaishakha after a forty-one day deeksha.
