About Hariyali Teej

Hariyali Teej falls on Shravana Shukla Tritiya, when the monsoon has turned the land lush and green, which gives the festival its name. It is celebrated mainly by women in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, and honours the reunion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati after her long years of devotion. Many married women observe a fast and pray for the wellbeing of their husbands and family, while young girls pray for a caring partner.

The festival has a cheerful, social spirit. Women dress in green clothes and bangles, apply mehendi, and gather to sing Teej songs and ride swings hung from the branches of trees. Married daughters often receive a sindhara from their parents' home, a gift of clothes, bangles, mehendi and sweets such as ghevar. In Jaipur, a traditional Teej procession carries the image of Teej Mata through the old city with music and folk performers. Teej is part of a family of monsoon festivals: Kajari Teej follows later in the season and is especially loved in eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar for its kajari folk songs, and Hartalika Teej is observed in Bhadrapada.
